Sweden Bans Home-schooling, Religious Instruction

The Kingdom of Sweden took a dramatic turn toward totalitarianism with the adoption of a sweeping new education “reform” package that essentially prohibits home schooling and forces all schools to teach the same government curriculum.

The draconian 1,500-page law — deceptively referred to by the Swedish government as “The new Education Act - for knowledge, choice and security” — was approved by Parliament last week amidst strong criticism and opposition. When it goes into effect next year, the entire educational system will be transformed, and alternative education abolished.

So-called “independent schools,” already financed and largely controlled by government, will now have to submit to the same regulatory framework as regular government schools. They will also be required to follow state-issued syllabi and curricula.

On June 25th of 2009, officials of Gotland, Sweden boarded a plane bound for India and removed Domenic Johansson from his parents’ custody without a warrant or reasonable cause to believe that he was being harmed. Their supposed crime? Choosing to home school Domenic and to delay or decline certain immunizations. Ironically, home schooling is legal in Sweden, and historically parents have always been given the option to legally delay or decline immunizations if they thought it in the best interest of their particular child or children
We have known for some time that this was on the cards. Here is the link to Minister of Education Jan Bjorklund's press secretary for letters:

And here for ROHUS, the Swedish Association for Home Education, for messages of support and petition signing:

It is an interesting point that our Coalition's advocacy of the Swedish system as a model for 'free schools' is now completely up the spout!
I have just finished reading, rather rapidly, the full text of the Johanssons' Application to the European Court of Human Rights. It is extremely interesting and, while maybe not entirely relevant now, it would have been, had Labour been returned, and could be in the future. It has horrible echoes of social workers' behaviour to that seen in this country.

Second and equally pertinent, that “democracy does not simply mean that the views of a majority must always prevail: a balance must be achieved which ensures the fair and proper treatment of minorities and avoids any abuse of a dominant position.”
This case personifies an abuse of the dominant majority position. Social services intervened into the private family life of the Johansson’s because they disagreed with the family’s belief system, making value judgments which are not permissible under Convention law. Rather than remaining neutral in its functions, the State actively discriminated against the family for holding beliefs which differed from the majority viewpoint.
seemed particulartly pertinent.

We must hope for a positive result. If there should not be one, then there is no justice and.... please can I have a ticket on the next rocket to Mars!
